Clarification on Recent Cinema Theatre Closures in Andhra Pradesh and Telangana

Hyderabad: The Telugu Film Producers’ Council (TFPC), along with the Telugu Film Chamber of Commerce and the Telangana State Film Chamber of Commerce, has issued a statement to address the recent media reports about cinema theatre closures in Andhra Pradesh and Telangana.

Background

In the past few months, several cinema theatres, particularly in the Guntur area and other parts of Andhra Pradesh, have closed down. Theatre owners have cited insufficient revenue as the main reason for these closures, which has made it difficult for them to pay digital service providers such as UFO and Qube.

Contributing Factors

Two major factors have contributed to the decline in theatre attendance:

  1. Elections: The election period has significantly reduced public leisure activities, including movie-going.
  2. IPL Season: The Indian Premier League (IPL) cricket matches have attracted large audiences, diverting them away from cinemas and impacting box office sales.

Addressing the Rumors

Contrary to the reports circulating on social media, digital platforms, and print media, the TFPC clarified that no official directive has been issued for a widespread closure of theatres. The statement emphasized that the closures are the result of individual decisions by theatre owners due to financial difficulties, and not a coordinated effort by any association within the Telugu film industry.

Official Stance

The Telugu Film Producers’ Council, along with the Telugu Film Chamber of Commerce and the Telangana State Film Chamber of Commerce, firmly denied any involvement in the theatre closures. The organizations reiterated their commitment to the welfare and betterment of the Telugu film industry, aiming to support and address the challenges faced by their members.

Appeal for Caution

The TFPC urged the public and media to avoid spreading unverified information that could cause unnecessary panic and confusion. The council reaffirmed its dedication to maintaining transparency and supporting the continuous operation of cinema theatres, ensuring the Telugu film industry continues to thrive.
